With deeper waters and open ocean I’m brave enough to crank the time-acceleration up really high. I imagine most people wouldn’t even notice it. To be fair it’s not the biggest error in the world. Ah, but it’s the left-hand side of the moon that’s illuminated! Has that burning Polish freighter risen into space and is now shining on the moon?įor the sake of not being stupidly large the above screenshot has had material cropped from the middle. Which is when I notice something strange. Even though there was plenty of room maybe this ship veered out of panic at seeing me drive down the middle of the canal?īy dusk we’re out of the canal and heading to open waters. There seems to be a drive-on-the-left rule in the canal. Now maybe, just maybe, this isn’t totally the game’s fault.

But one of them, on seeing me, drives straight into the canal shore. Other than another U-boat, I only see German merchants. Meanwhile, I’m peering at the flags of everything going up and down the canal, mainly so I can take a cheeky shot at an enemy to see if the game recognises that I’m breaking the rules by fighting in neutral waters. It feels really placeholder and it makes me wonder how it might’ve looked were it allowed to be finished. Up on the conning tower the watch crew loop a single animation where they point blankly at the sea, never reacting to anything on it. When crew talk to you, they rotate on the spot, like they’re doing some sort of dance with their shoulders. What worries me more at this point are the animations. They put on a German accent and throw in some German phrases here and there, which is exactly the balance I like – I can understand them while also being reminded that this is a German vessel with German crew.Īsking them about their personal lives is cute, time will tell if its anything more than a shallow morale-giving gimmick. They speak English (for my sake) but at least they don’t have those hideous American accents as from the trailer – ick. You can talk to the more important crewmen, so I do so. I take this time to get familiar with the sub. Leaving port at dawn, the trip down the canal is completed before dusk. With a bit of voice-commanding under my belt, I plot the snake-like route down the canal. Turns out I can save a lot of time going via the Kiel Canal. First person captaining with voice command is pretty immersive! I’m playing at driving through voice commands to get out of port.

So I return to port, the tutorial part is over, now it’s time to go to war for real.Īfter the tutorial I installed my first mod – a fantastic voice recognition mod. Good thing I’m not a proper game reviewer. And it’s probably less offensive than what Ubisoft did to this game! Remember: this was the first ship I’d destroyed. There’s a Polack joke in there somewhere. The first poor merchant ship explodes in a rather spectacular pyrotechnic fashion… I didn’t require no fancy maths to plot a torpedo route by driving right up to each and loosing a torpedo. When starting a new campaign you are given the task of blowing up some stationary Polish merchant vessels as a sort-of tutorial. Still, it seems kind-of pointless to register an account with yet another game company just to play a single player game. I was already aware that the stupid DRM had been relaxed (wouldn’t’ve have bought it otherwise).

Read on to see what bugs plagued my first mission as a U-boat Captain…
#Silent hunter 5 mods must have Patch#
Plenty of time to patch everything right? No, turns out Ubisoft is too cheap to put a reasonable effort toward that. I thought that surely it should be alright to play now that years have passed. The bundle includes Silent Hunter 5 yet oddly is cheaper than buying Silent Hunter 5 individually. U-boats appealed (mainly thanks to a recent viewing of the excellent Das Boot) and so I bought the Silent Hunter bundle on Steam. Everywhere you look in Silent Hunter 5 you see an excellent idea or piece of game design, but in an unfinished state that has either been hastily jury-rigged into operation or simply left broken. I feel really sorry for the developers at Ubisoft Romania who were on-track, I think, to have bettered even the legendary Silent Hunter 3. There, I said it, it feels good to get that out of the way. They bundled the game with stupid DRM and released it unfinished, with little intention to fix it post-release. Silent Hunter 5 could’ve been an amazing, genre-defining game.
